Why URLs need encoding
A URL may only carry letters, digits and a handful of symbols. Put a space, an ampersand or a non-Latin character straight into a query string and the address gets truncated or the value is cut short at the wrong place. Percent-encoding rewrites those characters into safe sequences such as %20, so the address arrives exactly as intended.
How to use it
- Paste the string you want to encode or decode into the input box.
- Choose the encode or decode direction.
- Copy the converted result.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?
- encodeURI encodes a whole address and deliberately leaves separators such as :, /, ? and & intact. encodeURIComponent encodes a single value and converts those separators too. Use encodeURIComponent for query parameter values.
- Is my input sent to a server?
- No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type is transmitted or stored.
