When to use Base64
Base64 represents arbitrary binary data using 64 safe ASCII characters. It is a transport encoding rather than encryption, which is why it is used to carry images or files through text-only channels such as JSON fields, email attachments, data URIs and HTTP headers.
How to use it
- Paste the text or Base64 string into the input box.
- Choose the encode or decode direction.
- Copy the result.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Base64 encoding make data secure?
- No. Base64 is trivially reversible by anyone and is not encryption. Never use it to hide passwords or personal data.
- Why do non-Latin characters break?
- In UTF-8 a single non-Latin character spans several bytes. Implementations that work per character rather than per byte corrupt them, so this tool converts to UTF-8 bytes before encoding.
